Turjak Castle is one of the most important castles in the former Kranjska region. At one time it was owned by the Auerspergs, whose power peaked during the era of the Reformation and the Turkish invasions that took place in Slovenia. It was first mentioned in 1220, although it is thought to have been built in the 10th or 11th century. The original castle stood a little lower down from the current one, on a rocky ledge, from where there was a clear view of the Roman road. Today, the only reminders of this are the ruins. It is not possible to accurately determine when the higher castle was built, although records from 1318 mention both castles. After the earthquake in 1511, a triangular Renaissance-style castle was built. Two circular towers protect the east side, while the opposite sides of the triangle come together in a mighty circular turret, also known as the Volovski tower.

Inside, there is a Protestant chapel decorated with 16th century frescos and a later Catholic chapel. Outside, an ancient lime tree stands in front of the castle.
