Trbovlje, St. Martin Church

On the site of today’s parish church, a Christian shrine is thought to have stood from the 13th century. During renovation, stone foundations were discovered, most likely original structures, as well as parts of the vaulted section. In 1332, the parish of Trbovlje, as well as the town of Braslovčani, became part of the Benedictine abbey at Gornji Grad, and in 1461, along with the abbey, became part of the Ljubjana diocese, in which it remained until 1787. Since then, it has been part of the Levantine (Maribor) diocese.
The current church was built in the 18th century. The main nave of the church was built between 1743 and 1745, although the current appearance was created in 1855, when the parish priest at the time, the poet Jožef Hašnik, extended the existing nave to accommodate the choir. He was encouraged to do so by the bishop, Anton Martin Slomšek, who sent his student to Trbovlje to take over the role of parish priest.
Some art historians believe that the original façade of the church gave high relief to the columns, which were removed, along with other parts, during the addition of the organ loft and were only further decorated with artwork. Through various alterations, the feel of the original Baroque style was slowly lost; only Maria’s throne and the typical roof over the bell tower remains in this style.
The floor plan of this building is shaped like a cross, with the main nave and the presbytery in a lengthwise direction, while the transept consists of two chapels. Beneath the paving of the Rožnovenska Mater božja (Holy Mary of the Rosary) chapel on the right hand side is a sealed ossuary. The main altar, which was renovated in 1966, is a beautiful Baroque work of art; however, its creator is unfortunately unknown. A new organ (from the Škrlab workshop) was installed in the church, with twenty-two registers. The Parish Church of Sv. Martin is delightful and well worth a visit.
