Loka pri Mengšu, Jable Castle

Jable Castle is set in a painstakingly chosen location, up above the source of the stream on the edge of a rocky hillside. The castle was supposedly built in 1530, but written sources first mention it in 1268. It bears a medieval design, although the present-day architecture maintains a Renaissance character. The last major reworking at the castle followed the earthquake of 1895. On the southern side, the basic layout has been supplemented by two polygonal towers, a smaller one in the southwest and a larger one in the southeast. On the axis of the southern façade is a simple Renaissance portal, over which was at one time the crest of the Lambergs, the first owners. On the southern, eastern and western facades the ground floor has preserved certain late Gothic stone window frames carved in the shape of buckwheat grains. Higher up the façade are preserved some funnel-shaped Renaissance arrows carved into the wall, recalling the defensive nature of the castle. The courtyard arcades were built at the beginning of the 17th century, as indicated by the Renaissance proportions and vaulted cloisters. After the earthquake in 1895, some of the stone pillars in the ceiling of the arcades were replaced with reinforced artificial stone. The rooms on the ground floor are for the most part vaulted, while the upper floor has wooden plastered ceilings with modest Baroque decorative stucco ornamentation.
The special occasion dining room on the upper floor of the southeast tower was painted by the Baroque fresco artist France Jelovšek in 1745. Some of the paintings, especially in the window niches, have also been preserved in other rooms.
Before the Second World War the furnished castle was seen and described by the art historians France Stele and Stane Mikuž. Nothing of the castle furnishings has been preserved except for the painted tapestries, which were given over for storage in the National Museum by the monument service after the Second World War. The renovated castle also houses a wedding hall.
