The subsidiary church of Sv. Neža (St Agnes) stands atop Kum Mountain and belongs in the Dobovec parish, in the diocese of Ljubljana. In the past there was another church on Kum, the church of Sv. Jošt (St Jodoc), which was even older than Sv. Neža, but had to be moved to accommodate the RTV transmitter. The memory of the church is kept alive on the wall of the Sv. Jošt chapel, where immense gatherings take place on Jernej’s Sunday, the last Sunday in August.
The church of Sv. Neža has three altars: the altars of St Agnes, St Bartholomew and St John the Baptist. The stone pulpit is inscribed with the date 1642. The church is built in the Romanesque style, although it gives no indication of exactly when. The original part of the church is currently the presbytery. Parish priest Janez Arihar elongated the church, while the priest Franc Šrajber built a new, independent bell tower. Larger bells were needed so as to forewarn of Turkish invasions. The bronze bells were lost during the First World War, and those currently in use were towed up Kum in 1925 by 18 pairs of oxen. Both vestries, as well as the choir loft, were built in 1679. Inside the bell tower of Sv. Neža hangs a bronze bell with the inscription: SANCTA AGNES ORA PRO NOBIS – MICHAEL REMER ME FECIT 1637.
Only the St Jernej pilgrimage has remained from the time when enormous gatherings were held, with as many as 50,000 people on Kum, as documented by Valvasor. If the weather allows for such gatherings and a good speaker is announced, up to 5,000 people still congregate. The parish priests from Dobovec have always put much effort into conserving the precious heritage of their ancestors.
