Kamnik, Zaprice Castle
On a small hill above Kamnik, which is first mentioned as an urban settlement in documents from the year 1229, stands one of the few surviving castles in the Kamnik area: Zaprice Castle. In 1550 the castle’s then owner Georg Lamberg demolished the medieval tower that stood on the site and erected the new castle building depicted by J. W. Valvasor in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola in the late 17th century. The castle was given its present appearance in the late baroque period. Older
Renaissance features survive in architectural elements of the exterior and in the vaulted ground floor. The salon is adorned by baroque paintings and paintings from the late 19th century.
The castle changed hands several times over the centuries. Since 1961 it has been managed by the Kamnik Intermunicipal Museum. As we walk through the rooms of the castle, museum exhibitions such as the lapidarium, ‘Reflections of Kamnik Centuries’, the unique collection of furniture by Michael Thonet, and the exhibition on nineteenth-century citizens of Kamnik conjure up the town’s rich history from its foundation to the present day. Occasional exhibitions, educational activities and concerts
in the museum complement the varied programme of culture in Kamnik.
