Hrastovica, St. Rocus Church

Relatively large for a village chapel of ease, the pilgrim church of St Roch was built in the mid-17th century. The surprisingly tall bell tower, visible from a great way off, was added to the church in the 18th century and is a prominent landmark. It is larger than all the other churches in the surrounding area and, fortunately, it underwent no remodelling or alterations in the 19th century. The church has three altars built soon after the church itself was built. They can be dated to the late 1660s. All three were significantly remodelled in the 19th century and although all three are examples of gilt altars, only the high altar conserves something of its original appearance.
Of the works of art in the church, all of which date from the 18th century, it is particularly worth mentioning the contribution of Anton Postl, a Baroque painter from Dolenjska. For the high altar he produced a painting of the church's patron, St Roch, and he was also responsible for the ex voto Procession against the Plague – understandable, since this is the church of St Roch, to whom people prayed for protection against the plague – and for the painting of Jesus being taken down from the Cross. Of particular note is the painted pulpit, carved from solid stone. This was built at the same time as the church. Originally it was directed with rosettes carved in relief but Anton Postl later decorated it with paintings of the four Evangelists. He did not use a primer, however, with the result that the original decorative relief elements are visible through the paintings. The Late Baroque period added to the church's fittings Potočnik's Way of the Cross. This is one of the very few examples from the late 18th century that have survived intact: all fourteen paintings with their original frames, decorative upper edges and, interestingly, the original panes of glass to protect the paintings. Also worth mentioning is a statue of St Roch from the late 17th or, more probably, early 18th century.
The pavement in the nave and the sanctuary has survived intact and probably dates from the 18th century. Made of local stone, its colours match the interior of the church and also the stone pulpit, which is made of the same material.
