Groblje, Church of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus

The origins of the church date back to the year 1526, when a church dedicated to the patron saints of Aquileia, St Hermagoras and St Fortunatus, is mentioned on this site. In 1735 the veneration of the Tyrolean patroness of peasants, St Notburga, began at a side altar in the church. She was joined soon afterwards by her male counterpart St Isidore the Farmer. The large number of worshippers led to the widening of the church, completed in 1740. Between 1759 and 1761 the entire church was painted by the great Slovene fresco-painter Franc Jelovšek. The Baroque scenic effect is particularly visible from the entrance, from where a sequence of arches with a system of segmental vaults and tiered arches directs the gaze towards the high altar, which heightens the impression of an integral work of art and creates an impressive Baroque setting. Jelovšek also designed the church fittings. The church is one of the most remarkable monuments of Baroque art in Slovenia. An avenue of ancient lindens leads to the pilgrim church.
