Dobrnič, St. George Church
Dobrnič, the centre of the northern part of Suha Krajina and the largest town in the Dobrniška basin, was first mentioned in the year 1136, and it was first referred to as a parish in 1296. The old town centre is a round market dominated by the Church of St George. In the early middle ages Dobrnič became the centre of a parish, which was annexed to the Stična monastery in 1399. The first church built in 1718 burnt down. Construction of the current Baroque church began in 1777 according to plans designed by the school of architect Leopold Hofer and was dedicated in 1785. The main altar from the 19th century is dedicated to the parish patron St George, while the side altars in the shallow chapels are dedicated to St Anthony of Padua and Our Lady of Sorrows. The old baptismal stone was used in baptising the missionary bishop who worked with Native Americans, Friderik Irenej Baraga (1797–1868), and the now retired Ljubljana archbishop Dr Alojzij Šuštar (born 1920, Grmada pri Trebnjem). Inside the church you will find a bust of bishop Baraga made by the academic sculptor Alojzij Progar, a native of nearby Mirna Peč. The stations of the cross were painted by Simon Ogrin in 1885, and another lovely piece of art is the easel painting by Anton Postel. The confessional boxes were made according to designs by the architect Jože Plečnik, the iron doors at Baraga’s christening stone were designed by the architect Valentinčič, and the lobby door by architect France Kvaternik. The organ made in 1968 has 21 registers, and the organ chest was designed by architect Erna Tomšič. The church benches were made by carpenter Jože Petek from Dobrnič. The Dobrnič church also has eight succursal churches.
Some points of interest around Dobrnič include the attractive, varied landscape; the Lisca and Šmavra wine regions; the remains of the Kozjek castle and Šumberk; Baraga’s home with two memorial rooms in Mala Vas; the outdoor museum at Jurjeva farm in Občine; and the memorial room of the first Congress of the Slovenian Anti-fascist Women’s Association in the Dobrnič cultural centre.
