Brežice, Culture House

The Cultural Centre is located next to the main road leading to the town centre and the square, Trg Izgnancev. It stands next to the Church of Sv. Rok, the library, the student dormitory and the bus station.
Originally, the building was intended to house cultural activities, a theatre and a cinema. Its function has changed over time. Part of the premises has been converted to accommodate the studio of Radio Brežice, and now the building also has a small coffee shop and educational facilities (classrooms) that can be rented.
The building stands on an irregular ground plan and measures 54.28 x 19.91 metres. It stands at a right angle to the main road connecting the centre of town with Šentlenart. It features two floors and a basement. The building can be accessed through two entrances. The main entrance leads from the main road, whereas the side entrance is located to the left of the main one on the northern side of the building. A gentle staircase leads to the main entrance and the ground floor, expanding into a platform in front of the entrance, which is used as the terrace of a small coffee shop located in the building.
The building features a large multi-purpose hall with 346 seats (278 in the stalls and 68 on the balcony), which is used for performances. A large entrance hall connects the hall and the main entrance, a small coffee shop and toilets in the basement. On the northern side of the building, there are utility rooms adjacent to the hall, which are used mostly during performances; they consist of a dressing and makeup room, toilets and a small storage area for theatre props. The first and second floor, connected by a stairway, has toilets and classrooms currently being rented by the local grammar school and the studio of Radio Brežice. The second floor at the same time gives access to the attic above the hall, where workshops are located.
The building was built in three phases. First phase (1937–1940): outer walls of the hall and the roof – a gable roof with a wooden structure and covered with tiles. Second phase (1954–1955): completion of the hall with the stage, entrance hall, toilets, balcony in the hall and cinema projection room. Only the outside walls, the hall and the entrance hall have survived from this phase. Third phase (1961–1962): the present-day building.
The Cultural Centre is used for a variety of purposes, but mostly for cultural events and performances and as a cinema, for which it was initially intended.
The multi-purpose hall, with 346 seats (278 on the main floor and 68 in the balcony), is used for a variety of purposes, but mostly for cultural events, such as theatre performances and choir competitions.
