The Municipality of Postojna lies in the south-east of Slovenia, where the coastal and inland regions meet. The current municipality was created with the division of the old municipality into two new ones, the Municipality of Postojna and the Municipality of Pivka. The municipality measures 270,268.878m2 and has more than 15.000 inhabitants.At the centre is the town of Postojna. The municipality is represented by the mayor Jernej Verbič; the highest decision-making body is the local council, in which there are 23 councillors. The municipality independently governs and carries out all local issues of public interest, e.g. immediate responsibilities as specified by laws, statutes, decrees and other council instruments.

The municipality of Postojna will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of obtaining its town charter in 2009.

The council’s policies are mainly directed towards placing the town of Postojna amongst the central localities of the region as a regional centre which serves as a supplier of public functions and services at a regional level (general needs of the population in an educational, social, cultural and commercial sense), as well as serving as a link between the population from regional, local and provincial centres and generating other commercial activities.

The municipality’s centre is the town of Postojna. It is divided into 13 local communities, which comprise 40 settlements.
