Municipality of Kamnik
Kamnik is a municipality of great variety, with a multitude of historical, cultural and natural treasures. Kamnik first appears in written sources in the year 1143 as the centre of the region of Counts of Andechs. Among the town’s treasures are the Romanesque chapel, the Little Castle (Mali grad) and the renovated defence tower, the Franciscan friary with its rich library of medieval books, and the oldest private museum in Slovenia, founded by Dr Josip N. Sadnikar in 1893. On the hills surrounding the town stand the ruins of medieval castles and the Renaissance-Baroque Zaprice Castle, which today houses a museum. In front of the building is an ethnological park with granaries from the Tuhinj Valley. Also interesting is Preskar’s Cottage (Preskarjeva bajta) on the Velika Planina plateau, where you can learn about the way of life of Alpine herdsmen. Increasingly popular with tourists is the Terme Snovik spa complex in the Tuhinj Valley, complete with pools, saunas and apartments. The Volčji Potok Arboretum and Arboretum Golf Club are also close at hand. Kamnik, with its maze of narrow streets, and the surrounding area, with its beautiful scenery, are well worth a visit.
