About the Programme:

Concert at the Court of Bayreuth

The court at Bayreuth became famous for its music, art and architecture in the times of Wilhelmine, the elder sister of Frederick the Great. Wilhelmine was forced 1731 by her father into the marriage with Count Friedrich of Bayreuth to stabilize the political sphere in Europe. She had to obey him although she didn't know her later husband and the Bayreuth court was known as a rural court with very little culture. But luckily in contrast to his father Count Carl Theodor her husband Friedrich loved music and art, he played the flute himself, just as Wilhelmine´s brother. Count Friedrich studied in Geneva and got in touch with the idea´s of the enlightenment. His obligatory educational journey went through France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany, he got to know art and culture: he took flute lessons with Michel Blavet, who stayed with Frederick the Great in Rheinsberg, he went to the concerts in the Academie Royale de Musique in Paris, studied manuscripts in libraries and architecture.
After Wilhelmine´s and Friedrich´s marriage both tried to establish a better life at the Court. Wilhelmine took some of her Court ladies from Berlin to Bayreuth, but she missed well educated people to talk with about arts and philosophy. She declared French to the language at court and tried to change everything in French style. She built an hermitage and a small castle called Monbijou, where she could flee from the reality. In 1737 Count Friedrich allowed Wilhelmine to create her court theater with the best singers and musicians. Bayreuth became famous for its concerts and opera´s. Wilhelmine tried to establish the same high level in music as her brother Frederick the Great in Berlin, but she couldn´t succeed in it, because of the lack of money.
Wilhelmine herself wrote several opera's and chamber music, unfortunately only a few manuscripts survived. Those which still exist show that the characters in her opera´s could act out Wilhelmine´s feelings of envy and sense of inferiority. Her music is nevertheless full of esprit and sentiment.
At the Court of Bayreuth were very well known composers and musicians as Franz Benda, Johann Joachim Quantz, Carl Heinrich Graun, Johann Adolf Hasse and the brothers Kleinknecht. A lot of singers and musicians came from Italy, among them Anna Bon, who was appointed as harpsichordist at an age of only sixteen years. Anna Bon must have been an excellent harpsichordist because Wilhelmine could appraise her, playing harpsichord very well herself. Even Georg Friedrich Telemann was asked to compose for the court. He wrote chamber music and two of his opera´s Alarich and Adelheid had their debut in Bayreuth.
The artistic life was created in a generous and amazing style. Wilhelmine´s court attracted a lot of visitors among them Voltaire, who frequently wrote to Wilhelmine providing an insight into the cultural and artistic developments all over Europe.
Unfortunately in1756 the seven year' s war made an abrupt end to the flourishing cultural life in Bayreuth.

Bio:

Pramea Ensemble is a trio with Susanne Wendler and Sari Räsänen, traverso’s, and Agnieszka Oszanca, violoncello. They met at the “Hogeschool voor de Kunsten” in Utrecht, where all of them studied historical interpretation. In 2001 they started playing chamber music together and tried to find new pieces for their repertoire which were not played or edited yet. They specialized on the fascinating, colourful and sparkling trios written in the new Preclassical style without basso continuo.
Pramea performs very successfully in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Finland and Slovenia. In summer 2005 they recorded their first CD: Preclassical Eloquence.
